Kaolin, also called china clay, is a soft white clay that is a required ingredient in the manufacture of china and porcelain and is mainly used in the making of paper, rubber, paint, and many other products. It is used widely in the ceramic industry, where its high fusion temperature and white-burning characteristics make it suitable for the manufacture of white ware , porcelain, and refractories. Kaolin is widely used alone in the manufacture of refractories. It is frequently used in adhesives for paper to control the penetration into the paper. It is an important ingredient in ink, organic plastics, some cosmetics, and many other products where its very whiteness, fine particle size, chemical inertness, and absorption properties give it particular value.
